Edison here, and welcome to another edition of Edison’s Math School where, math is made easier 🏫. Today it’s 26 math words that gets made easier❗
The 26 words!
In the chart below I’ve listed the 26 most common math words that you’ll see in grades 6 (age 11) to grade 12 (age 17), and into university. These 26 math words are in Numeracy and Algebra strand, though you’ll also see them in Measurement Geometry, Data Management, Finance. This post acts as a quiz to see how many of them you remember.
Backstory
One of the ways I help students get better is to have them remember the meanings of math words taught. Why? Because the same words keep coming up year after year after year and I want to be sure they know it as well as their national anthem, as the words stay the same and the meanings never change.
Knowing your math words should be easy if you see them every year, right? Well in my experience, no! Students don’t spend a lot of time thinking or losing sleep about meaning of math words, so this quiz is a wake-up call 🛌🏽.
Word meanings are so important when aiming to make sense of math, that it’s the third post I ever wrote on Math by Edison, April 2023, I’ll start at the very start – Words!, and is a key part to having a strong foundation.
How this quiz works?
The Words quiz is below, and also the PDF download: The 26 math words are written in column 2 in the chart and the quiz has three parts.
1. Column 1: Number of math word (#1 to 26)
2. Column 2: Math words given
3. Column 3: You’ll write the math symbol for that math word … so easy stuff.
4. Column 4: You’ll write an example with that symbol … easy to moderate.
5. Column 5: You’ll write the meaning of the math word … should be easy but isn’t for many students.Tip on Column 5: You’ll know your math meanings make sense if you can look at your meaning and work backwards to predict what the math word and symbols are (Columns 2 and 3).
