What is Math by Edison?

Hey, Edison here.

I am a private 1-on-1 math teacher and have done that for the last 30 years. Not a job-title you hear of much, and yes part of my job is to teach students math, as any teacher would in any school, but more than that my job is to show students how to become better in math. I achieve that by teaching students learning strategies that are not taught in most schools.

My expertise?

I work with 11- to 17-year-olds, Grade 6 to 12 math students, here in Ontario, Canada. And if you’re thinking, isn’t a mix of math and teenagers a challenge? It is at times, but it’s a good challenge, a wonderful challenge, and awesome challenge, and I’d add, doesn’t getting better at challenges make you stronger?

The strategies I write about

come from ‘outside-the-box’, and I call it that as most are not taught in schools, and I zoom in on specifics, no vague directions here - no ‘work harder’ or ‘study more’ mantras allowed. Why? Because when you’re working with teenagers and math, clarity of what to do, when to do it, why to do it, is a must. Students benefit from clarity of guidance! Do this and you will get this; it’s cause and effect!!!

My purpose in creating

Math by Edison back in March 2023 was to share and talk about the math learning strategies that have worked with my math students over the last three decades. Why am I doing this? Well … because for some reason, no one else talks about this stuff … at school, or anywhere!

Why is there no cost for a subscription?

Quick answer - no one else is doing this, plus it’s hard to justify charging a fee when I only do about one post/podcast a month. And it’s me giving back 😁!

This vocation working with teenagers is an experience that’s given me so much. So muchhhhhhhhhhhhhh! I’ve been fortunate to do something I love for decades, and for that I will be forever grateful and thankful. Yeah, I work 60-to-70-hour weeks, but it’s a lot easier to work those crazy hours when you’re making a difference, you love 😍💖what you do, and students learn how to access their superpower in math!

Math by Edison is me sharing with you the strategies I have created and know and has worked with the thousands of students I’ve worked with 1:1. The intent? That it helps you or anyone you know become better in math. Yes, it’s outside-the-box the thinking but sometimes to solve any problem you have to try a way you’ve never thought about.
