This rate video builds on the one posted in February. In this one, taken on a different rink (the world’s biggest skating rink), I record my rates for:
#1 Skating rate into the wind: skated 200 metres in 55 seconds
#2 Skating rate with the wind behind me: skated 200 metres in 45 seconds
#3 Heart rate: 13 beats in 10 seconds. The math word ‘rate’ is when you’re measuring two different units.
Three questions
#1 What’s my unit rate for a) the 55 seconds and b) the 45 seconds?
#2 Challenging question: What is the speed of the wind?
#3 What’s my heart rate in 60 seconds? And it’s not the 91 beats per minute I speak in the video
Answers
#1 a) 200m/55secs = 3.63 meters/second (in words, 3.63 meters per second)
b) 200m/45secs = 4.44 meters/second, (in words, 4.44 meters per second)
Unit rate means changing the rate so it is for one second (aka per second).
#2 a) 1 m/sec, b) 0.81m/sec, c) 0.405 m/sec, d) Other
#3 What’s my heart rate in 60 seconds? Answer 78 beats/minute
